Eleventh Planet is an augmented reality (AR) artwork by artists John Power and Joanne Mottthat and was a part of Melbourne Design Week 2024. It overlays the large chrome sphere public art sculpture in front of Eastern Eleven and transforms it into a series of animated artworks of changing worlds, inviting the audience to explore and be inspired as they journey through the artwork.
In this project, I had the opportunity to create various 3D models to be added to upcoming versions of the app.
The first model I created was a helmet, which I had to make from a prop. This process included the use of photogrammetry to capture the texture of the model and retopology. This model started with being low poly which was later refined to a high poly model.
The high textures were then baked onto the low poly model to make it compatible with mobile app usage.
I worked from a drawing on this model of an asteroid, where my main process was first to sculpt the shape of it in blender and apply a rock material through the shaders.
The high poly model was then retopologised into a low poly count model. The high poly textures were then baked onto the uv's of the low poly in the form of normal maps and image textures.
This is another model created from drawings John Power created where it would be a portal within the app. I had to balance the right amount of detail while also making sure the poly count was not too high.
This process involved creating the smaller models first and creating the shaders in blender which were then baked into separate texture files.
